Coach's Playbook

Mattias Top Five Tips

Tip One:
The shortest distance between two points is a staight line (in sailing terms: The Rhumb Line), Unfortunately in sailboat racing sailing the rum line is not always possible or in some cases not the fastest thing to do. As a competitor it is more important to sail in clear air, look for the puffs, surf waves, keep the boat flat, fly your tell-tails and stay within reason of the rum line.

Tip Two:
Keeping your boat flat and balanced does many things all at once.  The most important thing to remember is the boat is fastest when its flat. The foils ( Sails / rudder&Centerboard) are most effective when the boat is flat. Things at play here are COG(center of gravity), COE(center of effort), and the Bernoulli principle (theory of lift). ask coach for further explanation.

The often forgotten wind indicator
  Tip Three:
Watch your wind indicator and tell-tails. This is your best way to insure proper sail trim.

Tip Four:
Practice like you race, race like you practice!

Tip Five:
Physical training is very important.
Just remember....you can reduce or add  weight, add muscle, burn fat,
but it can't fix everything!
