About Us

What is a Seahorse?

No, it's not the small docile sea-creature that hangs around coral reefs and seaweed. In this case a Seahorse is a Youth Sailor from Lakewood Yacht Club.

The LYC Seahorse Program was started by the Schuhmachers, Rauschers, Parkers and Maniscalcos as an outlet for our youth to learn seamanship and boat handeling skills, for both fun and competition. From its humble beginings in 1970 the program is now the largest of its kind in the state of Texas.

Happy Seahorse Camper
With our full time Sailing Instructor and great Texas weather that allows for year round sailing (on both Clear Lake and Galveston Bay), the children of Lakewood are never without an opportunity to advance their skills.

The begining age requirement is to have graduated 1st grade and goes through age 18. The fleets that are promoted are the Opti, Sunfish, Laser (4.7, Radial, Full), and Club 420, with a little windsurfing thrown in. Lakewood has a full fleet of boats that are available to our members.

Through the Opti and Seahorse camps, children can advance from beginner to a regatta competitor. With our intense Summer Training Program and year round coaching sessions our sailors can advance as much as they desire while having fun.

It's not just about "sailing only" in the Seahorses. Social events, skiing, tubing, camp-outs, road trips, vollyball, powerboat courses, and much more round out this fun and educational experience that is offered at Lakewood Yacht Club.

Whether you're a beginner or advanced racer...whether you're a social sailor or have visions of Olympic gold, there is a place for you in the LYC Seahorses. If you are looking for a fun and physically challenging activity for your child, Lakewood Youth Sailing is the answer.
